Fresh out completing aeromedical training in Tikrit, Iraq, exactly on my last day of training. (to be able to fly medevac mission, first you have to complete aeromedical training to be able to perform all of the tasks that a Flight Medic in a UH-60A Helicopter must perform to help the crew and sustain the injured). Most of my training hours were completed "under fire" meaning that as part of my training, I was pulling real life missions with an evaluator, they jokely called it "progressing by fire". During this training period their is no room for mistakes or someone surely will die, sadly but real.
After a few hours of been on missions and returning to base for a meal and some rest, we got a called around 0300 hrs in the morning to go on a mission to the CSH pad in Bagdah, (Combat Support Hospital). The patient was put on the first bird and I took the second patient on the second bird and took our position for security purposes behind the first bird. Always as I depart on an flight, I pray before, during and after the flight. But this time was diferent, I felt the urge to puke, I felt unconfortable, I started to question the mission, but then I started praying. I asked the Lord to wake and stop everybody that knew me dead still and make them start praying. When you are some many feet in the air, you pray for some crazy things, your mind is going "at 100 miles an hour", so you pray fast and quietly, (nevertheless they cannot hear you if you decide to pray louder since the engines make a lot of noise anyhow), I felt fear, but also the comfort of t he Lord. But it was until I was in my bed that I stopped to think what really happen that night. As we enter Bagdah, which by the way it was my first time flying there, I saw a lot of building. See Bagdah is about the size of Miami, but less kept up, of course we bombed the city. I started seeing a lot of moments around me, and the radio traffic was a little weird, then it hit me, urgent prayer, "stat", pray, pray and pray, Those words kept pounding my head, so I prayed and I ask the Lord for my safety and those in my crew, all of the sudden we saw smoke about 700 meters from us and noise, I turned my head and continue to fly towards the CSH. The message came thru the radio "eyes out everybody, pay close attention to your 6 & 7 oclock position. So I did, we dropped the patient and went home with no problems. It was an outstanding mission, safe back home. The following day, I called my wife Betzaida, to see how she was doing, I love my family a lot and my country, but I lo ve God first. She surprised me with what she said..."Are you allright, are you hurt?" I said no sweetie, She started speaking awful fast and both in english and spanish, I had to tell her to calm down. After she calmed down, I'm qouting what she explained to me....."I was afraid for your life and as I went to sleep I saw a bubble covering you, like a shield and nothing could touch you and the crew, because the Lord loves you so much that he was protecting all of you to prove that he was a merciful God"... she then went on to say..."The Lord got me up and told me to pray and comfort me by telling me that I was not the only one praying for her beloved husband, that there were others praying to for me" she concluded by saying "that the Lord has me in his hands". That my friends is the power of prayer. After talking to my wife, the crew chief came up to me to tell me that he saw rounds and tracers been fire at us, furthermore the delivery route was not clear and another aircraft 10 minutes before we flew over the same route was shot down, but the crews were rescue that same night. When Jeremiah was crying and hiding in the cave, the Lord ask him, what are you doing here in the cave?, he replied in dispair, the Lord went on to say to him, they are more around here praying for you, more than those of Baal, (parapharsing), see Brothers the Lord is in control and my prayers are for him, my deliverer.
Please pray for my bible study groups, I have two one in Tikrit with a sub teacher while I'm TDY, and the one here. I have a Gospel group and the other one is in spanish, because the Lord does "nickpick" his people and furthermore he does not want none to perish. God bless you!!!
